Cannabis Decontamination in 2025: Comparing Ozone, UV, X-Ray, and Cold Plasma

As cannabis recalls tied to microbial contamination continue to mount across regulated markets, cultivators are increasingly turning to post-harvest decontamination technology to protect their harvests before they reach the testing lab. The options on the market have expanded significantly, and choosing the right system requires understanding what each technology actually does — and where it falls short.

Ozone Treatment

Ozone (O3) treatment exposes harvested flower to controlled concentrations of ozone gas, which oxidizes and destroys microbial cell walls, effectively inactivating bacteria, mold, and spores without heat or liquid solvents. The primary appeal is that ozone leaves no chemical residues. Systems like Willow Industries’ WillowPure have built strong track records in the market.

The main limitation: at high concentrations or extended exposure times, ozone oxidizes terpenes, potentially flattening the aroma and flavor profile of premium flower. Operators must carefully calibrate treatment parameters to balance decontamination efficacy against product quality.

UV-C Light

UV-C light disrupts microbial DNA, preventing reproduction. It’s a surface-level treatment, meaning it works best on exposed areas and may not penetrate dense flower structures where interior mold colonies can survive. UV-C is often used as a supplemental treatment rather than a standalone solution.

X-Ray Irradiation

X-ray irradiation inactivates microbes at the DNA level and operates at room temperature, preserving terpenes, potency, and moisture content. Unlike ozone or UV, X-ray penetrates the full structure of the flower, reaching internal contamination. For 2025 and 2026, X-ray systems are emerging as the leading option for operators who need high efficacy with minimal impact on product quality.

Cold Plasma

Cold plasma is an emerging technology that generates reactive species capable of inactivating microorganisms at low temperatures. Validation data in cannabis applications is still building, and most industry experts position cold plasma as suitable for pilot programs and evaluation rather than primary production systems at scale.

Choosing the Right Fit

The best decontamination technology for your facility depends on your scale, your product types, your target contaminants, and your tolerance for product quality trade-offs. What’s clear across all options: doing nothing is no longer a viable strategy in a market where recalls are becoming routine.
